Social Konnections: The "Real Talk" Q&A

Why curtains and window treatments?

For me, curtains and blinds were never just ‘fabric on a window’. They control light, privacy, temperature, and most importantly, how a space feels when you walk in. I chose this profession because I liked the idea that something I install quietly becomes part of a family’s daily routine, every morning when they open the blinds to let the day in, and every night when they close them to feel safe and at home. That responsibility keeps me grounded and pushes me to do the job properly every single time.

A project where you realized curtains change lives

Yes, there was a villa project early in my career with large, awkwardly shaped windows that flooded the bedrooms with harsh light and heat. The family wasn’t sleeping well, and the rooms felt uncomfortable. We redesigned everything with proper blackout blinds layered with sheers, adding the correct tracks and lining. When we finished, the client told me it was the first time in months their kids slept peacefully. That’s when I truly realized we aren’t just installing curtains, we’re improving how people live.

What does "bespoke" mean to you?

Bespoke’ to me means two things: accuracy and intention. Every window is different, height, width, depth, light exposure, usage, and wall finish. Readymade items ignore all of that. Custom-made means measuring properly, understanding how the client uses the room, choosing the right fabric, lining, and hardware, and then tailoring everything to that exact opening. It’s about making sure it works properly, looks clean, and lasts.

The ultimate "High" of the job

The best moment is a combination of technical satisfaction and seeing the client’s reaction. When the last bracket is fixed, the fabric is steamed, the folds fall exactly as they should, and the mechanism runs smoothly, that’s great. But the real ‘high’ is when the client sees it for the first time, pulls the cord or presses the remote, and you can literally see their stress drop. When they say, ‘Now it feels complete,’ that makes all the late nights worth it.

What material looks great in a sample book but is tough in reality?

High-shine, very lightweight synthetic fabrics. In the sample book they look luxurious, but in reality they can show every stitch, don’t drape well, and can be highly static. They are unforgiving when it comes to ironing and steaming, and any slight miscalculation becomes visible. They might photograph nicely, but for everyday use, they’re not always the best choice.

Handling the final touch under tight deadlines

We’re almost always called in at the end, when deadlines are burning and everyone is tired. The key is coordination and calm. We confirm measurements early, keep a clear timeline, and stay flexible on installation days. Instead of complaining that other contractors are in the way, we adjust our sequence so the client doesn’t feel the chaos—they only see the finished result.

Navigating a client's style clash

I never say ‘no’ directly at the start. I first listen to what they like and why. Then I explain, in simple terms, what practical issues might come up—like difficulty in cleaning, poor light control, or mechanical problems. After that, I show them similar alternatives that achieve the same look but are more suitable. Once clients understand that my goal is to protect their investment, they are usually open to guidance.

Sunny reminds us that bespoke design isn’t about being fancy, it’s about accuracy, care, and making sure a space works perfectly for the people living in it. My promise to you is that after reading his perspective, you’ll never look at a set of curtains or blinds the same way again.

The "Landscape" Rapid Fire 🌿

Sheers or Blackouts?

Both, sheers for daytime softness, blackouts for proper rest.

The most satisfying sound in the workshop?

The smooth glide of a track and the final “click” when a bracket locks perfectly in place.

The one tool you can’t live without on a Saturday morning?

My measuring tape, and a good level. If those are right, everything else follows.

Velvet: Timeless or a Trend?

Timeless, when used in the right space and color.

The biggest mistake people make picking curtain colors?

Choosing from a small swatch under showroom lighting without considering their actual wall color, flooring, and natural light at home.

If you weren’t "The Curtain Expert"?

Still in a field where I work with spaces and people, perhaps interior fitouts or another area where I can see a project physically transform from start to finish.

How BNI Konnectors has helped?

BNI! Connectors helped me convert what I do every day into a clear business story. It connected Sunshine Blinds Trading LLC with professionals across industries, opening doors to quality referrals, larger projects, and a community that supports growth.
